Jakarta (30/03) - Facing the current reality that the climate crisis impact has been occurring for years, the founder & CEO of Carbon Addons, Naufal, gave the real facts by comparing many Alaska Glaciers’ portraits between the 1890s and the early 2000s that has significant ice volume change.

He opened his TED talk in SDGs Power House initiated by Tanoto Foundation and SDGs Academy Indonesia with a powerful and eye-opening truth. “Climate change is real and we have to act now! We have seen that there are big differences in ice melting in Alaska Glacier due to the warming Earth”, Naufal told the audience.
Naufal added that our recent climate situation is apprehensive. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has just launched its latest report on the climate crisis, The AR6 Synthesis Report: Climate Change 2023. The report concludes that human activities unequivocally cause climate change and that it is happening faster and more extensively than previously thought. It states that global temperatures have risen by 1.1°C compared to pre-industrial levels. We are now at a 1.1°C increment and clearly out of track in limiting the 1.5°C target or even 2°C. They are likely reach or exceed 1.5°C within two decades, leading to more frequent and severe climate impacts such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and storms.
He also pointed out that, with these heartbreaking facts, the urgent need for immediate and ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C is undeniably needed. “Now more than ever, it is time to take action on climate change. Immediate concrete climate mitigation and adaptation, whether you like it or not, should be done rapidly, not only by the government but also businesses that emit the majority of our emissions and us as individuals”, Naufal described.

Naufal further explained that the more climate disasters that occur, the SDG targets in 2030 will also be hampered. He set examples that fulfillment of the no poverty target, access to clean water will be disrupted if the prolonged drought continues due to rising global temperatures. Life below water and life on earth will not happen if our oceans are getting more acidic because of rising sea levels, the coral will die, and species will become extinct. “The data shows that our SDG progress is only 14% and [we only have] less than 7 years to achieve it”, Naufal chimed in.
Due to this climate reality, he initiated Carbon Addons which strives to help individuals and businesses to reduce carbon emissions through a carbon offset platform. Along with his team, he created a carbon offset API/plugin that can be integrated into e-commerce, retail, shipping to transportation services to measure the carbon footprint generated from online transactions and allow their consumers to offset this emission by financing carbon reduction projects such as mangrove conservation, community-based renewable energy project, and waste management right before checkout payment.
”So far we have reduced 18.1 tons of CO2e by planting around 200 mangroves. From this endeavor, we also could empower 10 local communities and educate more than 3,000 people through our programs such as Carbon Academy, our learning platform to learn climate and sustainability for youth and young professionals.”, Naufal told.
Find Your Golden Circle to Start Climate Action
Looking at how Carbon Addons' team envisioned their purpose to reduce carbon emissions through technological innovation, Naufal shared several thoughts on how he initiated his climate action. He shared his secret recipe, a powerful framework, called “Golden Circle” coined by Simon Sinek in his book “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action” which can help us to find our ‘why’ on creating climate action initiatives and how the way to achieve this ‘why’ objective(s).
Fig 5. Golden Circle Concept introduced by Simon Sinek
This concept is structured to help us understand why someone does something, as well as understand why we do something that helps us achieve our goals. Within the golden circle, there are three circles intersecting like archery targets. The circle has three main components, namely ‘why’ (why, what purpose), ‘how’ (how to achieve this goal), and ‘what’ (what are the activities to achieve this). “By using these three components, we can determine targets and ways to achieve targets. This is what we need to explore again from ourselves, why do I want to make this change? What are the drivers? How do I achieve this change? And what do I need to do?”, he emphasized.
3 things to do to cultivate environmental consciousness mindset
Every day we make choices in our lives that affect the environment, the climate, and society. From what we eat to how we live will determine our future. “Building this mindset will help us to be more convinced to start this initiative”, Naufal said.
1. Make you feel that you are the center of the universe.
Every little thing we did will affect our society and Earth. Within this mindset, we will put environmental causes and impact upfront before we act or do something. Think twice before we buy and ensure our activities will benefit our Environment.
2. Implementing the 3Ps of Sustainability.
The 3Ps of sustainability are the three fundamental principles of sustainable development and sustainability. Knowing what the 3Ps of sustainability are and their importance is paramount to achieving our eco-friendly goals. The 3Ps of sustainability are People (Social), Profit (Economic), and Planet (Environment). Those are the 3 principles upon which sustainability is built and sustainable development achieved. The 3Ps are used to assess the sustainability of an activity, organization, or even product, and service. “Infusing these 3Ps will allow us to find a long-term model in terms of business or even how we live because we know that nowadays, we are currently facing Climate change, loss of biodiversity, and the eventual depletion of natural resources that can’t be ignored any further”, Naufal explained.
3. Evaluate every process and keep it consistent.
“After we do our initiative, we need to evaluate every process that we go through, improve, and keep it consistent to inspire others”. Evaluation is the key to improving climate action and keeping it grow sustainably.
He completely understood that it is hard to implement sustainability in our initiative or our daily life. Being an imperfect sustainability person or initiative is still sustainability. We need millions of people practicing imperfect sustainable lifestyles that will have a drastically larger impact than hundreds of people living a perfectly sustainable lifestyle. “So please just start it, we need millions of imperfections to create greater impact ”, Naufal concluded.
